- Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. Known for their exquisite fragrance, gardenias are popular ornamental shrubs that feature waxy, creamy-white flowers and glossy, dark green leaves. They are highly prized for their beauty and sweet scent.
- This low-growing dwarf gardenia is a great choice for a groundcover or low border, maturing at just 1 to 2 feet in height with a horizontal spread of 2 to 3 feet. It features small, densely growing, pointed, glossy green, leathery leaves and produces small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers.
- Care: When plants are mature and ready to be set out, select a lightly shaded location, plant in fertile, well-draining, acidic soil; water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, feed a good-quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in the Spring. Prune lightly and often after flowering. Protect from frost and freezing. Can be grown in full sun by gradually transitioning mature well established plants.
- Indoor Growing: Gardenias are not recommended for year-round indoor culture. Potted plants can be brought indoors briefly to display and enjoy the blooms, but they should be returned outdoors afterward.
- Climate: The Dwarf Radicans Gardenia is recommended for Zones 8 through 10A. It performs best in Zone 10A when planted in light shade, and typically requires nutritional supplementation to offset the common alkaline soil and water conditions in those locations.
