Dr. Steven R. Fasteau passed away at Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, on February 19, 2018.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Steve was the third of four sons born to Louis and Selma Fasteau. He graduated from Hamilton High School, Cal State L.A., earned his Ed.D from USC and devoted his professional life to advocacy on behalf of students with disabilities.
In his 35-year career he worked at Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Hospital, Cerritos College and El Camino College where he created the Special Resource Center for students with disabilities. He served as its director for over 20 years. He also served as Dean in various capacities.
Steve was one of the founders and first president of the California Association for Postsecondary Education and Disability. He was a passionate leader and fierce protector of programs for students with disabilities in higher education. He organized the “Past Presidents’ Scholarship” which is awarded to a student with a disability in pursuit of higher education. In retirement he joined the Pet Visitation Team at Torrance Memorial Hospital with his golden retriever Reba.
A lover of travel via cruise ship, golf, technology, music, movies, fine dining and life, he ventured into each of his interests with enthusiasm. He was a vibrant, caring man. His casual manner and wit will be missed.
Devoted to his beloved wife Sally, and golden retriever, Steve is also survived by his brother Charles, nieces, nephews, cousins, many dear longtime friends, neighbors, and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers Ted and Herb. Steve’s memorial service was held at 10:00am on Sunday, March 25, at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes.
